Pair of French Seven-Light Gilt Bronze Candelabra "Aux Canephores"

This magnificent signed pair of seven-light candelabra is an outstanding example of the exceptional craftsmanship and highly refined style of French Classicism during the Bourbon Restoration period. The pieces are executed in a striking combination of olive-patinated bronze and richly chased, mercury-gilded bronze (ormolu), reflecting the opulent taste and technical excellence of early 19th-century Parisian bronziers.

The authenticity and attribution are confirmed by the clear signature “LVS. ROBERT” engraved on the bronze base ring, referring to the renowned Parisian bronzier Louis-Valentin-Elias Robert, whose high-quality productions defined this period.

Each candelabrum features an elegant classical female figure in the iconic form of a Canephore (basket bearer), a motif derived from ancient Greek tradition. Cast in olive-patinated bronze, the figure is draped in flowing antique garments, rendered in the virtuoso wet-drapery manner, where the thin fabric adheres to the body to emphasize the graceful anatomy beneath.

Balanced atop her head is a chalice-shaped capital from which rises the sumptuous seven-branch candle armature, entirely crafted in superb ormolu. The candelabrum is enriched with finely chased palmettes, acanthus leaves, and other Classical ornaments. The brilliant gilding forms a powerful visual contrast with the deep olive patina of the figure.

The architectural base is made of black marble or ebonized stone, mounted with finely detailed gilt-bronze appliqués and resting on sculpted paw-feet.

As clearly signed works by a distinguished Parisian bronzier, these candelabra possess significant collector’s value and embody the elegance and representational grandeur of the early 19th century.

A museum-quality pair by the celebrated bronzier L.-V.-E. Robert.
