This elegant chiffonnière (or table de chevet) in the second Louis XVI style, dating from the early 19th century, captivates with its harmonious combination of strict geometry and magnificent bronze ornamentation. The piece is a prime example of the Goût Grec, the phase of French Neoclassicism that turned away from the playful forms of the Rococo and returned to antique models.
The main body is crafted with fine tulipwood (bois de rose) and kingwood (bois de violette) marquetry. Particularly noteworthy is the use of contrasting veneers. The fronts of the three drawers feature geometric inlay framed by fine strapwork marquetry. The side panels are designed using a striking book-matched herringbone veneer technique, which lends the piece an architectural depth. The top is similarly richly inlaid and is bordered by a continuous, pierced gilt-bronze gallery.
The quality of the fire-gilt bronzes (ormolu / bronze doré) is exceptional and defines the luxurious character of the piece. The corners are adorned with magnificent ram's heads (têtes de bélier) that transition into trailing acanthus leaves and festoons. Below the top runs a continuous frieze in the form of tasseled drapery, giving the furniture an almost textile-like lightness. The slender, gently curved legs (a subtle nod to the Transition period) terminate in finely chased bronze sabots.
The back panel shows signs of age-related shrinkage in the wood, indicating the authentic aging of the materials used. The furniture remains in an excellent state of preservation, boasting a deep, warm patina to the polish.
