This splendid composition depicting Mary Magdalene surrounded by a garland of flowers is attributed to the renowned floral still life painter Mario Nuzzi (Penna 1603 – Rome 1673), nicknamed "Mario de' Fiori" for his skill in depicting a wide variety of botanical species on his canvases in the typical manner of his Flemish contemporaries.
In addition to his meticulous observation of floral species, the artist stands out for his ability to capture the effects of light, highlighted by the use of a consistently dark background, still influenced by Caravaggio.
The work published here perfectly expresses his art and is part of a series of paintings featuring sacred images within a sumptuous garland of multicolored flowers. Following the remarkable success of a subject that combined the sacred and the profane, Nuzzi and his workshop produced a diverse series of works depicting Madonnas, Saints, Nativities, and other religious scenes within floral garlands. The noble families of Rome, who constituted a large portion of his clientele, found this artistic combination, imported from the Flemish Masters, highly attractive and easier to place than traditional religious paintings.
Notable in this case, in addition to the beautiful garland, which astonishes with its countless petals and corollas, is the quality of the central painting, executed with great finesse and rich in detail. The Magdalene is reclining in a dark cave, bathed in light from a luminous landscape. Above her, a group of little angels play music and sing praises to the Lord.
The skull and the sacred scriptures stand next to the attractive Holy Sinner, testifying to her repentance.
The canvas is in excellent condition and is presented in a large, antique, gilded frame.
