Giovanni Stanchi (Rome, 1608–1675) Workshop
Still Life with a Vase of Flowers
Oil on canvas 76 x 61 cm. - Framed (with imperfections) 93 x 77 cm.
The composition features a lush bouquet of flowers arranged in an elegant vase with a classic silhouette—barely visible—resting on a surface below that blends into the twilight.
The bouquet consists of various species depicted with exceptional naturalistic precision; particularly notable are striped tulips (in shades of red, white, and pink), open roses, carnations with jagged petals, and small white flowers—such as jasmine or anemones—that dot the composition.
The painting is attributed to the workshop of Giovanni Stanchi, also known as Stanchi dei Fiori. Giovanni Stanchi (Rome, 1608 – c. 1675) headed a prolific family workshop that collaborated with the most illustrious Roman families, such as the Barberini, the Chigi, and the Colonna.
Stanch’s flower paintings represent a pivotal moment in the transition from Caravaggesque naturalism to the decorative splendor of the Roman Baroque.
The work is characterized by a strong Caravaggesque chiaroscuro, in which the flowers emerge with vibrant luminosity from a completely dark background, which amplifies the brilliance and liveliness of the red, white, and gold pigments, and lends an almost sculptural three-dimensionality to the corollas.
The formal accuracy and precision in depicting the petals and leaves demonstrate the influence of the Flemish masters and the great technical skill of the Stanchi workshop in rendering reflections and natural freshness.
The painting is set in a significant period box frame, characterized by lacquered bands in shades of green-blue with gilded profiles and striking carved and gilded corner decorations featuring leaf motifs.
