Pair of Baroque Giltwood Angels, Tuscany, circa 1700

A beautiful and large pair of giltwood angels.

Depicted in flight, with outstretched arms and expressive faces, these two plump, chubby angels are characteristic of the Italian Baroque style.

Original Mecca gilding*.

In good condition, with minor restorations to the gilding. Formerly with wings.

Tuscan work, circa 1700.

Height: 69 cm; Width: 50 cm

*Mecca gilding, or "argento mecca," is a gilding technique used exclusively in Italy.

It involves applying silver leaf, which is much less expensive, and then covering it with a varnish (mecca) that imitates gold, resulting in a very pale gilding with unique reflections.
