At Georges Binet’s, In the Garden by Georges Binet (1865-1949)

Georges Binet 1865-1949

Born in Le Havre in 1865, he began his training under the painter Charles Lhullier and went on to study in Paris in the renowned studios of Raphaël Collin and Fernand Cormon.

Binet soon broke away from academicism to adopt a freer style, influenced by the Impressionists he met in Normandy.

A regular exhibitor at the Salon des Artistes Français between 1889 and 1939, he was awarded a medal in 1899 and named Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur in 1937.

Like the Impressionist painters—though he never identified as one—Binet loved to capture scenes from everyday life. His flower market paintings were regularly exhibited and earned him a gold medal at the 1912 Salon

Here, the artist presents two small, intimate scenes that blend pointillism and impressionism.
In one of them, the artist depicts himself in the company of his friends: a Belgian scholar and a Mexican painter.
