Portrait of a Young Princess, French School, 17th Century circa 1600

Circle of François Clouet

Oil on oak panel, 28 × 22 cm. Presented in a charming giltwood frame with guilloche?carved mouldings and red corner motifs, 41 × 35 cm

This delicate female portrait belongs to the refined tradition of French portraiture at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries, inherited from François Clouet and his circle. The young princess, shown half length against a dark background, embodies the ideals of beauty cherished at the French court under the last Valois and the early Bourbons: a porcelain pale complexion, softly tinted lips, and a gentle, slightly distant gaze.

Identifying the sitter remains challenging: the aesthetic canons of the period recur across many female figures, both known and anonymous, making any specific attribution uncertain. This idealised face represents a type rather than an individual—a symbol of elegance and purity.

Her costume reflects great refinement: a red bodice adorned with fine gilt stripes, puffed sleeves, and a wide, meticulously pleated ruff. The jewellery—a necklace of dark pearls and a gold pendant set with a black stone—adds a discreet touch of preciousness. Her hair, raised beneath an embroidered veil in the so called raquette style fashionable in the late 16th century, is completed by a delicate adornment of pearls and rubies.

The paint surface, smooth and finely worked, displays a very subtle craquelure typical of old panels. The whole composition captivates through its freshness and balance, combining the rigour of representation with feminine grace.
This portrait, in a fine state of preservation, perfectly illustrates the French taste for aristocratic sobriety and the technical perfection inherited from Clouet, while foreshadowing the sensibility of the 17th century.
