The Austrian noble family of the Rösel von Rosenhof moved to Franconia. One of their descendants, Franz Rösel, began studying painting under Paul Kolb in 1643. Many of his animal and forest scenes were found in the significant cabinets of the era. Another hare by his hand, though facing right (oil on panel, 37 × 58 cm), is held in the Bavarian State Painting Collections (Inv. No. 4991). Other animal depictions there include The Victorious Wolf, Lynx with Prey, Roe Deer and Hare, and Wolf and Fox, some of which are dated around 1665. Johann August Rösel von Rosenhof also became a renowned artist; without his dedicated research and depiction of insects, the Enlightenment’s understanding of nature might have been quite different.
