Jean-Antoine Watteau, Circle of (Valenciennes 1684 – Nogent-sur-Marne 1721)


Sheet size: 12 x 14,8 cm / 4.7 × 5.8 in

The head is covered with a lion’s cap and turned to the right. The left hand grasps the blowpipe of the bagpipes. The drawing is based on a detail from Pietro da Cortona’s (1596–1669) painting in the Salon de Mars at the Palazzo Pitti, Florence. The initial attribution to Watteau was made by Jacques Mathey.
