Mirror with a cartouche depicting a sun, mid-18th century

Rectangular mirror in finely moulded wood decorated with pearls, scallop shells, and scrolling foliage motifs.

The crest is surmounted by an oval medallion framed by carved draperies and crowned with a ribbon-tied bow. At the center of the medallion appears a radiant sun with a human face, an emblematic motif of the royal solar iconography of Versailles. On either side of the medallion, covered urns rest upon scrolling vegetal volutes.

The whole is entirely gilt with gold leaf, displaying a beautiful old patina with natural wear visible in places.
