17th-century Audenarde Tapestry: Tancred in the Enchanted Forest
A Literary and Dramatic Epic
It depicts the crusader knight Tancred entering the enchanted forest of Ismen. Haunted by the memory of his beloved Clorinda, whom he tragically killed in a nighttime battle without recognizing her, he strikes a tree with his sword to break the forest's spell. The viewer grasps the precise moment of this miracle: the bark is cut (detail visible in the center) and reveals the ethereal silhouette of Clorinda, whose soul is imprisoned within the trunk. Between terror and pain, Tancred recoils, suspended between the reality of war and magical illusion.
A "Verdure" of Exceptional Richness
A true masterpiece from the Oudenaarde Manufactory, this piece is a typical 17th-century "Verdure with Figures."
The Foliage: The density of the trees, rendered in a range of deep blues, greens, and ochres, creates an immersive depth. The specific technique of Flemish weavers for playing with light and shadow through the leaves is evident.
The Figure: Tancred is depicted in superbly detailed "antique-style" armor, surmounted by a helmet with an imposing plume, emphasizing his status as an epic hero.
An Original State Border
One of the major assets of this tapestry is its rich, perfectly preserved original border.
It forms a powerful architectural frame composed of large, raised cartouches.
The decoration is a Baroque profusion of garlands of flowers, fruit, and stylized shells at the corners, characteristic of the Louis XIV style.
Four medallions at the centers of the borders depict miniature landscapes, creating a delicate mise en abyme of the central motif.
Technical characteristics:
Origin: Oudenaarde, Flanders.
Period: 17th century.
Dimensions: 217 cm (Width) x 282 cm (Height).
Condition: Beautifully vibrant colors, rich Baroque iconography.
This piece is not merely a prestigious decorative element; it is a window onto the chivalric imagination of the Grand Siècle, combining the technical virtuosity of Flanders with the tragic poetry of Tasso.
