Carved Crucifixion Stand with Skull Base - Southern Germany 17th century

This striking devotional object is conceived as a tall, sculptural crucifixion stand, masterfully carved in wood and combining rich theological symbolism with refined craftsmanship. The elongated shaft rises organically from a deeply carved base in the form of a skull resting upon crossed bones—an explicit reference to Golgotha, the place of the Crucifixion, and a traditional memento mori.

The skull is rendered with expressive naturalism and is further enriched by a finely carved serpent emerging across its surface, shown devouring an apple. This rare and evocative motif alludes directly to the Fall of Man in the Garden of Eden, linking original sin with Christ’s redemptive sacrifice on the Cross. The juxtaposition of the skull, serpent, and fruit forms a powerful visual theology: death enters the world through sin, yet is overcome through the Crucifixion above.

From this symbolic base, a slender, tapering stem rises to support the Crucifix. The Corpus Christi, carved in pale boxwood, stands in elegant contrast to the darker-toned shaft. Christ is depicted with elongated proportions and sensitively modeled anatomy, his head inclined and body gently sagging, conveying both physical suffering and spiritual resignation. The perizoma is rendered with fluid, dynamic folds characteristic of Southern German Baroque carving.

Above, the cross is surmounted by a carved INRI titulus. The overall composition emphasizes a strong vertical movement, guiding the viewer’s eye from sin and mortality at the base to redemption at the apex.

The piece reflects the sculptural language associated with the circle of Christoph Daniel Schenck, whose works are distinguished by their expressive intensity, fine detailing, and sophisticated integration of symbolic elements.
