Porcelain cup for women who had recently given birth, "Ville e Bersò" decoration.
Cozzi factory, second half of the 18th century.
Dimensions: plate diameter 21 cm
The maternal cut was a gift usually given to pregnant women from noble families. The cup was used for the first meal after giving birth.
The Ville e Bersò theme:
Bersò derives from the French "berceau," a term that referred to a pergola, architecture, and evergreen trees.
The Venetians had long since discovered the countryside and resided in their villas on the mainland, so recurring themes included gardens with pergolas adorned with cabbage roses, hedges, ruins, and various architectural features reminiscent of their summer residences.
