17th & 18th centuries French furnitures and Art
A richly carved walnut wedding chest in high relief, depicting the Adoration of the Christ Child by the Magi.
This scene is framed by small columns and term figures, each with distinct features. The inscription “Jesus Maria” along the lower section emphasizes the devotional nature of the piece, further reinforced by the presence of the Pelican with outstretched wings, symbolizing Christ nourishing mankind with his body and blood.
While the term figures on the front display expressive faces, the sides of the chest are decorated with moulded panels carved with grotesque mascarons, characteristic of the German Mannerist ornamental vocabulary of the late 16th century.
The interior reveals a compartment with a lateral reserve, and the inside of the lid features a complex three-bolt lock in damascened wrought iron.
Southern Germany, circa 1580.
Later feet.
