The Rape of the Sabine Women took place during the reign of Romulus. Seeking to increase the population and military strength of Rome, he welcomed only men into the city, which soon led to a shortage of women.
To resolve this, Romulus invited neighbouring populations to attend the Consualia festival, created in honour of the god Consus. While the guests were focused on the equestrian games, the Romans seized the Sabine women.
This bronze sculpture is a reduced version of the monumental marble by Giambologna, commissioned by Francesco I de' Medici and unveiled in 1583.
It remains in its original location at the Loggia dei Lanzi.
