This charming portrait of a child depicts Charles de France, future Duke of Berry, grandson of Louis XIV and son of the Grand Dauphin. Executed in the style of François de Troy at the end of the 17th century, it belongs to the tradition of princely child portraits, where the softness of features blends with the solemnity of rank.
Like many small-format works produced in Versailles and its surroundings, this painting belongs to the category of reduced versions of official portraits. These works were intended for members of the provincial nobility who came to attend court ceremonies. Keen to bring back a tangible memory of their time at the court of the Sun King, they acquired these miniature likenesses of members of the royal family. These portraits, both intimate and precious, would then circulate within aristocratic residences as symbols of proximity—real or imagined—to the centre of power.
The young Duke of Berry is depicted here with all the childlike grace characteristic of this type of representation: carefully styled hair, richly adorned costume, and a gentle, slightly melancholic expression. The painting is immediately appealing, capturing childhood with delicacy while also conveying the dignity of royal blood.
Biography of the Duke of Berry (1686–1714)
Charles de France, the third grandson of Louis XIV, was granted the title of Duke of Berry at birth. Raised within the circle of the Grand Dauphin, he was destined for a military career and took part in several campaigns, notably during the War of the Spanish Succession. Married to Marie Louise d’Orléans, he played a moderate yet respected political role. His premature death at the age of twenty-eight brought to an end a lineage that might have played an important role in the succession to the throne. He remains in history as one of the most beloved princes of his generation, appreciated for his gentleness and affable nature.
Overall good condition, recently cleaned and revarnished.
