This splendid pair of paintings, executed with exceptional detail, superbly showcases the unparalleled pictorial skills of the celebrated landscape masters of the Flemish school.
Among the many great artists, the BRUEGHEL family, a family of Belgian artists, stood out for their exceptional skill and vivid imagination. They perfectly interpreted this particular pictorial art, becoming the promoters of an artistic expression that enjoyed enormous success in the 17th century and continued to evolve in the centuries that followed.
The simple and spontaneous joy of life of the peasants is depicted in a fairytale-like and sometimes grotesque manner, using bold colors typical of the Flemish Baroque, as can be seen in the pair of landscapes presented here.
The paintings in question particularly reflect the work of Jan Brueghel II the Younger (Brussels 1601-Antwerp 1678), son of Jan Brueghel the Elder and father of Abraham Brueghel, who was known for his sumptuous still lifes.
Trained by his father, after a trip to Italy that took him to Rome and Naples, Jan returned to Antwerp in 1625.
Here he established and became the director of a renowned and thriving workshop, also working for numerous prestigious clients, including the court of Paris.
The artist of these paintings is a master artist who worked closely with the Master, as evidenced by his stylistic perfection, exceptional color palette, and inimitable imagination in his depictions of landscape.
The canvases published here, which are also larger than the more common panel and copper paintings, are an important example of the artistic output of his workshop.
It should be noted that canvas paintings by Jan Brueghel and his collaborators are very rare and are found only in large-scale landscapes.
The two works are striking on a wall and would lend themselves to decorating an important hall, arousing interest and curiosity in guests.
Their state of preservation is excellent, and the impressive original frames, lacquered with gilded trim, perfectly complement the paintings.
