During the Middle Ages in Europe, brooches were a highly fashionable accessory. They were fastened to the neck with a buckle. Medieval brooches exhibited a diverse range of shapes and designs, from simple to elaborate, as exemplified in this exquisite example. Some brooches were inscribed with religious or devotional prayers, messages of love and friendship, or other symbolic messages. Common gemstones used to adorn these miniature pieces of jewellery included pearls, amber, coral, jet, and, as in our case, polished garnet.
