17th & 18th centuries Furniture and Statuary
Charming rectangular casket in Sainte Lucie wood, carved on all sides and on the ogee-shaped lid, with a rich decoration of scrolls, arabesques, small flowers, and plant motifs.
The abundance and finesse of the ornamentation allow us to attribute this very attractive casket to the sculptor César Bagard (1620-1709).
Sainte Lucie wood is a reddish-hued wood from a variety of cherry tree. Its name originates from a convent – ??Sainte-Lucie-du-Mont – located in the hills above Sampigny in the Meuse region, where, in the 17th century, a craft developed for religious objects made from this wood, which was found in abundance around the convent.
It is also known as "Bagard wood" after the famous sculptor from Nancy, César Bagard (1620-1709), who crafted some very beautiful objects from it during the second half of the 17th century, as evidenced by our box.
