Paintings, Drawings, and Sculptures from the 16th to the 20th Century
This small oil on panel, monogrammed "GC" in the lower left, captures with freshness a snow-covered valley in the Riesengebirge mountain range, its slopes standing out against the horizon in the warm light of late afternoon. An isolated farmhouse and a path winding through the snow enliven the foreground, while a border of fir trees frames the composition. Its intimate format and free brushwork suggest a study done from nature, reflecting a sensitive observation of mountain landscapes in the early 19th century. The Riesengebirge massif appears repeatedly in the work of Gustave Carus, who sought to convey its changing atmospheres and the effects of light.
