This remarkable bronze bust depicts Galatea, a figure inspired by classical mythology and one of the most beloved models of the French sculptor Emmanuel Villanis. Villanis distinguished himself at the end of the 19th century with his elegant female busts, blending academic precision with the refined sensibility characteristic of the fin-de-siècle style. The sculpture represents a young woman with a serene and introspective expression. Her head is slightly inclined, and her hair is gathered into a delicately modeled chignon, held in place by a headband. Her bare shoulders emerge gracefully from a rocky base, creating a striking contrast between the smooth, polished surfaces of her body and the more expressive texture of the base and drapery. This interplay between delicate modeling and raw materials is characteristic of Villanis's most successful compositions. The title "GALATEA" is clearly molded into the base, accompanied by a fragment of a classical column, which reinforces the mythological reference and lends the piece a distinctive architectural presence. The bronze is signed "E. Villanis" on the drapery. Villanis exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon, where his female busts were very successful and widely cast in bronze by Parisian foundries. Today, his works are particularly sought after by collectors for the finesse of their modeling, their high decorative quality, and their close connection to the artistic culture of the Belle Époque. This example is distinguished by its monumental dimensions and its beautiful, nuanced patina. Large-scale busts by Villanis are considerably rarer than the more modestly sized decorative models usually found on the market. Dimensions: Height: 64 cm; Width: 43 cm; Depth: 25 cm. A remarkable example of fin-de-siècle French bronze sculpture, combining classical inspiration with the characteristic elegance of the Belle Époque.
