Emmanuel Villanis (1858–1914), Galatea

This remarkable bronze bust depicts Galatea, a figure inspired by classical mythology and one of the most beloved models of the French sculptor Emmanuel Villanis. Villanis distinguished himself at the end of the 19th century with his elegant female busts, blending academic precision with the refined sensibility characteristic of the fin-de-siècle style. The sculpture represents a young woman with a serene and introspective expression. Her head is slightly inclined, and her hair is gathered into a delicately modeled chignon, held in place by a headband. Her bare shoulders emerge gracefully from a rocky base, creating a striking contrast between the smooth, polished surfaces of her body and the more expressive texture of the base and drapery.
