The item in question is a piece of furniture known as a “Bonheur du jour,” consisting of a lower section with a table with curved rosewood legs, opening at the front with a drawer forming a writing desk equipped with an inkwell and silver sandglass ; decorated on three sides with a gilt bronze “Greek” motif in reserve. The top, beautifully inlaid with utensils and “domestic” objects, supports a stepped upper section, consisting of a central niche veneered in rosewood, with a drawer at the bottom inlaid with domestic objects, inscribed with two small doors inlaid with flower vases, which are repeated on the sides. The top of the tiered section is itself decorated with similar marquetry.
Magnificent Parisian work from the Transition period circa 1770, marked JME and stamped by the cabinetmaker Roger Vandercruse Lacroix, known as RVLC (1728/1799), who became a master craftsman in 1755.
