Two-light bouillotte lamp in gilt bronze with a painted sheet-metal shade.
Early Louis XVI period.
This lamp bears on its base the inscription RAINÇY, the mark of the furnishings from the Château du Raincy, built by the famous architect Louis Le Vau. The estate was acquired in 1769 by Louis-Philippe d’Orléans, Duke of Orléans and cousin of King Louis XVI. This lamp therefore formed part of the furnishings of his château.
The original mercury gilding is in good condition. The light arms and the shade are adjustable in height. A discreet modern electrical system allows the lamp to be illuminated; it is entirely removable and has been installed without any alteration to the object.
Condition notes:
– the upper finial is not original
– one drip pan differs, though of the same period and gilding
– a solder repair on the adjustable shade support has slightly altered the gilding
A rare object of significant historical interest.
