Flemish tapestry 17th - A Great Sign Appeared in the Sky,Book Revelation 12

The tapestry, woven in Flemish workshops and dating from the 17th century, depicts the Virgin Mary, crowned with twelve stars, crushing the serpent's head.

Book of Revelation: A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head. The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.

This iconography is traditionally associated with the biblical verse from Genesis 3:15:

“I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”

This verse is often interpreted as a prophecy of victory over evil, with the “woman” frequently seen as a figure of Mary, the mother of Jesus. She holds an important place in the Christian faith for her role in the defeat of sin and Satan.

In keeping with tradition, this magnificent tapestry has undergone a thorough cleaning, the addition of a hand-sewn linen lining, and meticulous inspection by our experts in our workshop. It is now ready to grace your home.
