Biography:
George Lavroff, born Georgui Dimitrievitch Lavrov, was an emblematic Russian sculptor from Siberia. His artistic training began under D. I. Karatonov, which he pursued alongside medical studies in Tomsk. An engaged artist from the time of the October Revolution, he joined the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia in Moscow in 1922.
Between 1927 and 1935, his stay in France marked a turning point. Sent to promote Soviet art, he established himself on the Parisian art scene. Exhibiting at the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon d’Automne, he achieved notable success with his animal sculptures in bronze and ceramics. Upon returning to the USSR in 1935, he became an official figure, dedicating himself to monumental works and portraits of political leaders. A major retrospective exhibition was held in his honor in Moscow in 1982.
