Antonin Mercié's (1845–1916) iconic sculpture, Gloria Victis, is among the most significant allegorical works of late 19th-century French sculpture. The composition depicts a winged figure carrying a fallen young warrior, a poignant tribute to heroism, sacrifice, and the tragedy of defeat. Through its sense of movement, the finesse of its anatomy, and the remarkable treatment of drapery, this work is firmly rooted in the French Neoclassical tradition. This example is made of patinated and partially gilded bronze. It bears the signature and title, as well as the prestigious foundry mark: F. Barbedienne, foundry in Paris. Also found here is the mechanical reduction hallmark: Mechanical Reduction A. Collas. A piece with a strong sculptural presence, ideal for a collection or a characterful interior.
