This Carrying of the Cross is a fragment of a Flemish altarpiece, reflecting the intense artistic production of Brabant workshops in the early 16th century. Renowned for their craftsmanship, these workshops produced and exported sculpted altarpieces throughout Europe, meeting a growing demand for objects of devotion and religious storytelling. This scene is part of the development of iconographic cycles inspired by the Passion of Christ. The Carrying of the Cross holds a central place in these narratives, positioned between the Crowning with Thorns and the Crucifixion. Here, Christ is depicted kneeling, supporting the Cross, surrounded by two soldiers. The meticulous attention given to the executioners’ clothing—shoulder pieces, armor, hose—and the dramatic tension animating the highly expressive faces of the protagonists attest to the quality of this artistic production and the narrative richness of these reliefs. Inserted by the dozens into monumental altarpiece cases, these reliefs allowed the story to unfold in all its grandeur.
