Charles ANGRAND
(1854, Criquetot-sur-Ouville – 1926, Rouen)

A founding member of the Salon des Artistes Indépendants in 1884, Angrand developed close ties with Georges Seurat, Paul Signac, Maximilien Luce, Henri Edmond Cross, and Félix Fénéon. He adopted Pointillism from 1886 onward. His most intense period of painting took place between 1880 and 1890. Deeply affected by Seurat’s death in 1891, he almost completely ceased painting and devoted himself to drawing with Conté crayon, notably producing the Maternities series.
After a brief return to color between 1905 and 1908, he turned primarily to pastel, a medium he continued to use until his death in 1926. Charles Angrand is buried in the Monumental Cemetery of Rouen.
