Banks of the Seine - Joseph Delattre (1858-1912)

“Painted around 1902, this work depicts a recurring subject in the oeuvre of Joseph Delattre: a gribane.
Gribanes were sailing vessels used on the Seine in Normandy, mainly between Rouen and Le Havre, at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century.
Equipped with a flat bottom and a large carrying capacity, they were perfectly suited to the constraints of the river and its tides.
They were mainly used to transport heavy goods such as wood, stone, or coal.
Powered by sail and sometimes towed from the banks,
they gradually disappeared with the arrival of motorized barges.
