Rare fruitwood or beechwood group depicting the Coronation of the Virgin.
Christ and the Madonna are both seated on a single tree trunk at the moment when Christ raises his right hand to place the crown on the Madonna's slightly inclined head.
This rare group, due to its iconography, is a particularly recurring subject in German sculpture during the 14th century, in the regions near the Rhine and Meuse rivers. They are present both in monumental marble and stone statuary and in wooden altars, where they were inserted as a central element along with other biblical and saintly stories.
