Biography :
Ernest Henri Dubois, known as Ernest Dubois (1863-1930), was a French sculptor and medalist. Drawn to painting and sculpture from a young age, Dubois entered the Paris Decorative arts school in 1881, then the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he studied in the studios of Henri Chapu and Alexandre Falguière. He was also a student of Jules Chaplain and Antonin Mercié, who made him his favorite pupil.
Dubois created busts and allegorical works, which he exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1892 onward, the year he received an honorable mention for "Jeune Adolescent".
Ernest Dubois was noticed at the 1894 Salon and awarded a first-class medal for "Le Pardon", one of his best-known works, which the French State commissioned to be reproduced in marble for the Luxembourg Palace (now exhibited at the Orsay Museum). He received a medal of honor in 1899 as the marble sculpture was finished.
From then on, his reputation was established, earning him numerous commissions. In 1900, at the Universal Exhibition in Paris, Ernest Dubois presented the model of the Bossuet statue at the Grand Palais. Its success was such that he received the Medal of Honor and was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor. The Bossuet monument was completed and installed in the Maux Cathedral in 1911, the same year Dubois was promoted to Officer of the Legion of Honor.
