An exceptional Christ with marvelous facial expression and beautifully draped robe. Since He clearly has the wound in His right side, the sculpture cannot refer to a biblical scene prior to the crucifixion: could it be a ‘Man of Sorrows’ or a ‘Risen Christ’?
Whereas the iconography of Christ as ‘Man of Sorrows’ almost always depicts Christ with His crown of thorns (as well as with other instruments of His torture) and clad in a perizonium rather than in a robe we believe that this sculpture is probably a ‘Risen Christ’ (with the right hand in a blessing gesture). Traces of xylophagi, arms missing but overall very good condition. Minimal remains of original polychromy in some folds of the robe. Probably limewood. On a later wooden stand. Old label (1958) from the Dr. Gustav Münzel collection (1874-1960). Exhibited: Cologne Fine Art Fair 2019
