The art of “taracea” (Spanish for inlay), seems to have entered the European mainland through Spain where it flourished under the Nasrid dynasty, after it gained popularity in Italy. The Nasrid dynasty, which governed the Kingdom of Granada from 1232 to 1492, avoided figurative representations in accordance with Islamic artistic traditions. Consequently, the decoration of these inlaid works featured intricate geometric patterns and repetitive motifs, featured in complex architectural designs and works of art, such as this coffer.
