A rare and impressive Dutch mirror.

Of ebony and ebonised wood and polychrome-painted glass, octagonal in shape, with a central mirror plate surrounded by eight panels decorated with scenes representing Dutch merchants with Ottoman colleagues, some in a Dutch interior. All panels are framed by waved mouldings.
One panel damaged.
Ca 1680.
Dimensions : 110 cm high x 102 cm.

Although the two comparanda mirrors were catalogued as Spanish or French, these mirrors are definitely of Dutch origin based on the painted costumes and interiors in a 17th c. style.
No other similar mirrors are known by my knowledge, and because of their importance they belong all to be hung in a Dutch museum.

The panel on the underside gives us an accurate period to date this mirror because this panel shows the comet of Kirch which appears in the Dutch republic during the winter of 1680-1681.

Comparanda :
- Christie’s - 05-05-2011, lot 243.
- Christie’s New York, 23-04-2026, lot 118.

Provenance :
Private Collection Austria.
