Old Masters Paintings and Antique Furniture from the 16th to the 18th century
It is with immense joy that I present this majestic Louis XV Lombard display cabinet in walnut and walnut burl, measuring 130 x 132 x 65 cm, dating from the first half of the 18th century, with a truly rare curvature.
In the first half of the 18th century, Lombardy's finest cabinetmakers set about constructing this marvellous piece of furniture known as an urn or sarcophagus due to its characteristic upper section, which narrows noticeably towards the top, taking on the shape of an urn.
The curve of the sabre legs, ending in curls, foreshadows the triple movement of this walnut burl piece of furniture and creates a fluid continuity in the undulation of the shaped apron, which is also repeated on the sides. On the front, there are three drawers made with the same high-quality materials.
The finely and elegantly curved drop-front top narrows towards the top, resting on a rectangular base; it is also surmounted by a so-called priest's hat, which often conceals a secret.
In this piece of furniture, the Lombard influence, already evident in its curved structure, is further emphasised by the turnip-skin briarwood decoration, enclosed in a large rocaille cartouche with wide curves that extends from the front to the rest of the piece.
The same decoration is found in the drawer under the top, flanking the keyhole and handles (both original). The structure of the piece is emphasised by prominent corner pilasters, both above and below, which highlight the curves of the corners.
The piece, in perfect condition, comes from a private home.
