Snow Effect on the Hills of Lescure - Narcisse Guilbert (1878-1942)

Painted around 1925, this work by Narcisse Guilbert reveals his remarkable skill in depicting winter landscapes.
With a luminous palette, he conveys the effects of snow through vigorous brushstrokes in bluish tones. The moving waters of the Seine subtly reflect the now-vanished Île aux Cerises.
Located about two kilometers upstream from Rouen, the Île aux Cerises once had its own café-restaurant, where guests enjoyed the famous eel matelote — a dish served in nearly all the riverside taverns along the Seine. On Sundays, elegantly dressed visitors came to listen to orchestras and dance. The view of Rouen was magnificent: with the easel set close to the water, painters were surrounded by the silvery reflections of the river.
