Our Lady of Deliverance is prayed for for expectant mothers, people subject to temptation and captives. She is also the Patron Saint of Sailors.
In polychrome terracotta, this large statue represents Our Lady of Deliverance holding the Child rescuing a soul from purgatory. Purgatory is represented here by this place where the flames of hell and the heavenly cloud meet. Jesus breaks the chains, freeing the soul from purgatory where it was imprisoned. Touching expression and fine original polychromy for this unusual iconographic theme.
A production of the Charles Barbarin house, statue maker in Lyon at 11 Place Saint Jean at the end of the 19th or beginning of the 20th century.
Dimensions: 101 cm high by 43 cm wide and 29 deep.
Good condition - cracks under the base.
