Large bust in white Carrara marble with a cherry marble base. It depicts the young Emperor Caesar Augustus, also known as Gaius Octavus. Second half of the 19th century.
Beautifully sculpted, particularly the hair, which has been re-carved. The marble has a very fine grain.
The young Octavian was Julius Caesar's nephew, who succeeded his adoptive father under the name Augustus Caesar. This work is based on the antique bust in the Galleria dei Busti of the Museo Pio-Clementino in the Vatican (no. 714).
A beautiful, refined object typical of souvenirs from the Grand Tour, an aristocratic educational journey through Europe undertaken by young men from the highest classes of European society from the 17th to the 19th century.
In very good condition, with a beautiful cherry marble base added at a later date.
