Large white Carrara marble bust depicting a young woman with hair adorned with leaves and bunches of grapes, signed "Fedi" on the back.
Originally from Viterbo but a Florentine by adoption, Pio Fedi trained at the Florentine Academy under Lorenzo Bartolini and at the Accademia di San Luca in Rome, where he studied under Pietro Tenerani. However, it was in the Tuscan capital that his very personal vision of art was formed. During the years when Florence was the capital, he achieved international renown, particularly appreciated by a large clientele, especially foreigners, who frequently visited his studio, admiring not only the large models of his monumental works intended to be transposed into marble, such as the Monument to General Manfredo Fanti and to Tuscan Civilization, but especially his small salon statues illustrating amorous allegories or subjects from Dante's repertoire, such as the Nello della Pietra and the Pia de' Tolomei.
Greatly admired by Grand Duke Leopold II of Tuscany, he divided his work between the purism of his early years and the ideal realism to which he devoted himself until his death. Among his major works are "Radiant Liberty," created for the funerary monument of Giovanni Battista Niccolini, erected in the Basilica of Santa Croce, which inspired the French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi for his Miss Liberty, a famous symbol of New York, and "The Rape of Polyxena," a monumental marble group exhibited in the nearby Loggia della Signoria. The latter was recently the subject of an exhibition following the acquisition of the terracotta model by the Uffizi Gallery.
His studio, the former church of Santa Chiara, on Via dei Serragli, bequeathed by the artist to the city of Florence, along with all his work tools, numerous works, and some models, is commemorated by a plaque on the façade.
Our bust belongs to the artist's second period, that of ideal realism, and bears many similarities to some of his works, particularly "Liberty."
Like most of his works, the bust is large.
The bust is in excellent condition, intact and unrestored. Please note a small restoration at the base.
