Eugène Marioton (1857-1933) - Phoebe

Eugène Marioton (1857-1933), "Phoebe", bronze figure signed "E. Marioton sc." and "Salon de Beaux-Arts". Presented at the 1889 Salon to a most enthusiastic reception, this sculpture testifies to the exceptional mastery of its creator. With a refined double patina, which highlights the fine details and gives the sculpture a remarkable depth, the bronze rests gracefully on an elegant pink marble base, decorated with brass feet, adding a touch of nobility to the whole. The title of the work, finely engraved in the marble and gilded with fine gold, underlines the care taken with each element of this exceptional piece. Although this model has been reproduced in several copies, the quality of the finish and the execution make this sculpture a rarer work and a precious testimony to the artistic know-how of the late 19th century.

Phoebe or Phoebe: "the shining one", is the Titaness "with the golden diadem" as Hesiod would say; wife of Coeus, she retained her place in heaven after the revolt of the Titans. Phoebe was the Titaness of Light who was later associated with Selene, the goddess of the moon. She was also the Titaness of prophecies, notably the oracle of Delphi. She was the third goddess to be in charge of it, after Gaia and Themis. Aeschylus, in the introduction to the Eumenides, has the Pythia herself say that Phoebe had control of this oracle, which she transmitted to Apollo as a birthday present.

Eugène Marioton, born April 7, 1857 in Paris, is a French sculptor who works primarily in bronze. His works follow the traditions of neoclassicism, representing small cast bronze sculptures of French historical leaders and personalities from ancient Greece and Rome. He regularly participated in the Société des Artistes Français and was part of the jury for the sculpture section of the salon in 1905. Before his death in 1933, Marioton received several awards for his work, including a prize from the Société des Beaux-Arts and a young artists' grant from the Conseil Général de la Seine in 1884.
