Nativity Of The Virgin Circa 1470/80

This remarkable sculpted, polychrome, and gilded panel depicts a rare scene of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, a precious theme in Christian iconography. In the center, a bedridden Saint Anne is surrounded by women offering her care and assistance. Below, the child Virgin is tenderly held by a midwife, a scene imbued with gentleness and refinement.
The figures are finely modeled, and the folds of the drapes bear witness to the mastery typical of Germanic late Gothic sculpture. The decoration retains large parts of its original polychromy and gilding, with a partially incomplete background suggesting the age of the piece without altering its readability.
