Neoclassical Carrara marble bust of Asteria, signed on the back "Wiliam Physick sculpt." for Edward William Physick.
Edward William Physick (1774-1862) was an English sculptor from Cornwall. In 1810, he began exhibiting at the Royal Academy and continued regularly until 1842. Between 1824 and 1838, he also exhibited at the British Institution. Although most of his exhibited works appear to be portrait busts, he also executed fine mythological female busts , ideal subjects such as The Parting of Hector and Andromache (1824) and Saint John the Baptist Preaching in the Wilderness (1832), as well as several religious monuments from the 1820s to the 1840s, scattered throughout London's churches. He lived from 1810 to 1824 at 23 Spring Street, Portman Square, and later at 16 Park Terrace, Regent's Park. He is buried in Kensal Green Cemetery. Most of his works are owned by the State.
Asteria is a character from Greek mythology: Titan, daughter of Koios and Phoebe, sister of Leto; according to the most common version of the myth, wife of Perses and mother of Hecate. Literary tradition identifies Asteria with the island of Delos: to escape Zeus, it was transformed into an island wandering the waves.
