France, second half of the 19th century
Dimensions: H 31 × W 28 × D 23 cm
A striking and finely cast gilt bronze centerpiece or vase, resting on an open tripod base richly adorned with acanthus leaves, lion masks, paw feet, and volute scrolls. The central bowl is encircled by exquisitely detailed friezes featuring playful putti in classical scenes, framed by engraved borders and flanked by elegant, curved handles.
This piece is known as a work by Ferdinand Barbedienne (1810–1892), one of the most celebrated bronziers of the 19th century. Although unsigned, it corresponds exactly to a documented model bearing his signature. The superb casting, ornamental richness, and stylistic coherence are all characteristic of the Barbedienne foundry’s finest creations.
A decorative masterpiece of museum calibre—elegant, sculptural, and emblematic of the grandeur of the Napoleon III era.
