Head of a young bishop with remains of original red, blue and black polychromy. Soft and empathetic expression. Could it be Saint Louis from Toulouse, often represented in Christian iconography as the ‘boy bishop’ because he died at the age of 23? Central France, Loire valley, end of 15th century. Weathered, losses (tip of nose and chin), chips (eyes, nose, chin …). Very soft, white, chalk-like ‘tuffeau’ stone (typical for Loire valley).
Dimensions (without stand): 21x12x15cm.
