Enamelled gold pomander decorated with flowers

French, mid 17th century.

Dimensions: 2.4 x 1.4cm.

Weight: 6.5 grams.

This finely crafted gold box, richly pierced and enamelled with floral motifs, was designed to hold aromatic substances whose scent would diffuse through the openwork. Its pierced lid and sides are adorned with vibrant enamelled flowers, while the flat base features additional floral decoration. The interior is beautifully finished with delicate blue and white enamelled blossoms in the Delft style.

The box remains in remarkably well-preserved condition, with minor enamel losses and small chips consistent with its age and delicate craftsmanship.

A pomander is a small, often ornate container used to hold fragrant substances like spices or resins, worn or carried from the medieval to early modern periods to ward off bad smells and protect against disease. Originating from the French pomme d’ambre (“apple of amber”), they served both practical and symbolic roles, functioning as personal air fresheners and expressions of status or piety.

For a closely related example with similarly enamelled decoration, see The Walters Art Museum, Baltimore, Accession no. 44.487.
