Albert Bertalan (1899-1957) "Nude in a red interior"

"Nude in a red interior", large oil painting on canvas signed A. Bertalan.

Albert Bertalan (Jászberény-Hungary, 21 September 1899; Paris, 28 December 1957) was a Franco-Hungarian painter of the School of Paris.
From the late 19th century to World War II, Paris was the center of the art world. Artists and intellectuals from all over the world came to Paris, attracted by the atmosphere of creative freedom established by the French Impressionists. Thanks to the innovations of the impressionists, the direction of art changed forever, the time was ripe for a new Renaissance. The School of Paris, as this vast group of artists is called, embodies the spirit of modernism. Albert Bertalan, born in Hungary, studied at the Nagybanyai School of Art with some of his country's most important artists, including Ivànyi Grünwald, Adolf Fényes and Istàn Réti. He holds a solo exhibition in Nuremberg and regularly exhibits at the Pal Lazlo Gallery in Budapest. In 1924 he moved to Paris where he held his first exhibition in 1925. He participated in the Paris Salon, the Salon des Indépendants in 1926 and 1930, the Salon d'Automne in 1926 and the Salon des Tuileries in 1930. In 1928 he won the Prize Szinyei. During his time in Paris, his paintings were very expressionistic, incorporating composition, brush technique and a unique vision, which make his work very identifiable today. His work develops through many distinct phases: Impressionist, Cézannienne, Matissienne, Cubist and Modernist.

Our painting features a dense mix of bright colors and sharp outlines, typical of the Parisian period inspired by the works of Henri Matisse: a young naked woman sitting in front of the dressing table while a Creole servant brushes her hair, against a background of curtains bright red florals. The large size, the beautiful colors and the particularity of the scene make it a unique painting.
