Pastel depicting the entrance to the port of Concarneau, signed Mathurin Janssaud, presented in its original stucco frame.
Mathurin Janssaud, born in Manosque (Alpes-de-Haute-Provence) on March 29, 1857, and died in the 15th arrondissement of Paris on January 27, 1940, was a French painter known for his watercolors and for his association with the Concarneau School.
He initially moved to Paris, but over time developed a particular interest in scenes of Brittany, especially the coastal landscapes of Concarneau.
He thus became associated with the Concarneau School, a group of eleven local and nationally recognized painters who shared a fascination with the town's landscapes: Alfred Guillou, Théophile Deyrolle, Henri Barnoin, Fernand Legout-Gérard, Eugène Labitte, Émile-Benedikt von Hirschfeld, Lucien-Victor Delpy, Paul Eschbach, Lucien Simon, and Émile Simon.
The Musée d'Orsay in Paris holds his pastel Sunset in a Breton Harbor, Concarneau.
