Suite of 9 remarkable chairs Louis XVI period

Seven armchairs, a bergère and a sofa
by Nicolas Denis Delaisement, Master in 1776

Dimensions :
Armchairs: H. 91.5 x W. 61.5 x Seat depth 51cm / Wall depth 63 cm
Sofa: H. 98 x W. 194 x D. 70cm (seat) / D. 80 (to the wall)
Bergère : H. 92 x W. 66 x Seat depth 56 cm

This set of chairs is in carved and lacquered beech, with flat rectangular "à la Reine" backs. The accuracy of the proportions, the construction of the barrels and the precision of the carving are in perfect harmony with the prestigious signature that these seats bear: Nicolas Denis Delaisement, who was awarded the title of Master in Paris in 1776, produced lacquered and gilded seats of great skill during the Louis XVI period. His output was far less abundant than that of Georges JACOB, who had real production workshops and adapted the level of models to the various orders he received. With Delaisement, quality is much more consistent, and simple models are rarely found.

As Jean Nicolay so aptly put it in his seminal work, "Nicolas Denis Delaisement's seating designs almost always reflect a very sure taste and personal research". With a high level of technical design, the works of this chair carpenter are perfectly proportioned, elegant and balanced.

In this series, we find typical Delaisement characteristics, such as the finesse and regularity of the fluting, curved armrests that enter high into the backrests, and short, round armrest heads with careful scrolls. The sculpture is abundant and varied: ribbons, pearls, friezes of piasters and acanthus leaves are executed with depth and clarity. The connecting dice are richly decorated with flowers. The front belt is slightly convex.

They are in excellent condition, with no broken foot joints or crosspieces. These 9 chairs have been completely restored in woodwork and lacquer. They are currently being upholstered, traditionally for the armchairs, and with cushions for the bergère and the sofa. The advertised price includes restoration of woodwork and lacquer; it does not include the cost of upholstery, fabric and trimmings.
