Offered by Isabelle Chalvignac
A set of four carved, lacquered, and gilded wooden armchairs, suitable for ceremonial or wedding occasions, featuring masterful and meticulous carving that supports their attribution to Turin, Piedmont, in the late 18th century.
Lacquered in midnight blue and deep black with gold leaf accents that highlight the foliage carvings throughout the frame of the chairs, a two-tone contrast typical of Italian Neoclassical taste.
The spectacular armrests culminate in two facing doves pecking at each other, carved in a coiled motif; the seat band is adorned at its center with two facing doves surrounded by floral scrolls and foliage finely carved in relief, as are the side bands; the four legs, adorned at their tops with a dove, are tapered and spirally fluted, ending in small spinning-top-shaped feet;
The slightly concave backrest is also embellished with a frieze of foliage surrounding a dove with outstretched wings.
Contemporary upholstery in a beautiful velvet fabric with abstract patterns evoking clouds. In perfect condition.
With the richness and controlled eccentricity of their carvings, these chairs are an iconic example of Piedmontese palace furniture.
