Italy, 17th century.
Presented in a precious carved and gilded wood "Cassetta" frame.
Total dimensions: 44 x 52.5 cm. Slate: 23 x 31 cm
Painted on a slate plate, this rare Baroque painting is undoubtedly part of the Verona school of painters, best known for Alessandro Turchi, known as l'Orbetto.
Their specificity was to propose and realize charming paintings, executed on stone, slate, marble, onyx and lapis lazuli (for the most refined) intended for private oratories.
For slate, meticulous polishing enables the artist to place his figures on a black background that perfectly imitates a shiny, smooth nocturnal ambience.
Powerful overhead lighting illuminates the scene in the pure Caravaggesque tradition of chiaroscuro.
Our little painting represents one of the most charming and colorful of all subjects: the adoration of the Magi.
Exceptional state of preservation, as the slate has not been fractured and remains intact.
